Microsoft Bitlocker and its’ Pitfalls
When you purchase a new Computer with Windows, the 1st thing you are asked to do is to create a “Login”.
Be Careful!!
What Microsoft is trying to do is to get you to use their “Cloud” to store your Computer Password in the hopes that you will use this service to store your data as well.
Of course, Microsoft offers you a minimal amount of storage for free, but then charges you forever for this service once you pass that minimal threshold.
The 1st Problem:
If you forget your password and enter it incorrectly 4 times, Microsoft locks you out from retrieving it again unless you pay them a fee.
2nd Problem:
While it may seem convenient for you to use the Microsoft Cloud or any other cloud service to store or back-up your data, it is not always safe. Networks are breached, sometimes often.
Just ask the US Government, Target, Wal-Mart, Veterans Administration, Yahoo, and others. Millions of confidential files and credit card information was hacked (breached) and are in the hands of unscrupulous individuals.
In summary,
When creating a user account for Microsoft Windows DO NOT us the cloud service. Instead, select “locally” as the place you create your user account and it will remain on your Computer locally.
Furthermore, storing photographs in any cloud is dangerous. If someone were to access those photos, they would know what you look like and probably be able to identify members of your family and friends. You never want this to occur. This allows stalkers and thieves to be able to track your movements and either attack you or rob you when you are not home.
Back-up your data to a locally connected hard drive. It is perfectly safe and under your direct control! We recommend the Western Digital Workbook for about $125, for either a Windows PC or MAC (they use different formats). It is a 3 Terabyte Hard Drive. Get the USB 3 version, as it is the fastest connection currently available.
